The Nature and Wildlife Association (NWA) is actively engaged in supporting wildlife crime prevention and enforcement efforts across North Bengal through a collaborative approach involving government agencies, conservation organizations, legal experts, and local communities. Recognizing that illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and wildlife-related offences pose significant threats to biodiversity conservation, NWA works to strengthen the capacity of frontline stakeholders and improve information-sharing mechanisms to combat wildlife crime effectively.
As part of this initiative, NWA has partnered with multiple conservation organizations, non-governmental institutions, and central enforcement agencies to organize and participate in specialized training programmes, workshops, and capacity-building exercises focused on wildlife crime detection, investigation, and legal procedures. These programmes aim to equip field personnel, community volunteers, and conservation practitioners with the knowledge and skills required to identify wildlife offences and support enforcement actions.
A key component of the programme is the development of community-based informer networks in sensitive landscapes, enabling the timely flow of information related to wildlife crime and illegal activities. By fostering trust and collaboration with local communities, the initiative strengthens intelligence gathering and supports proactive conservation interventions.
NWA also works with experienced legal professionals and senior counsels to facilitate access to legal guidance and support in wildlife-related cases, helping strengthen the implementation of wildlife protection laws. In addition, the organization regularly attends and collaborates in workshops on wildlife article identification, enabling stakeholders to better recognize animal parts, derivatives, and wildlife products commonly involved in illegal trade.
Through strategic partnerships, capacity building, community engagement, and legal support mechanisms, NWA’s Wildlife Crime Control Initiative contributes towards strengthening wildlife law enforcement and protecting the rich biodiversity of North Bengal and the Eastern Himalayan landscape.
